Most animals including our furry friends, dogs and cats, have an Endo-Cannabinoid System. Naturally produced Cannabinoid molecules and the receptors that receive them are thought to be the most important physiologic system involved in establishing and maintaining mammalian health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors, CB-1, CB-2, and others are found throughout the body and have higher concentrations in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same: homeostasis. The Endo-cannabinoid System in pets helps maintain a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment.
Though the American Veterinary Medical Association does not recognize the benefits of Cannabis for use with pets, there are many veterinarians who have seen the benefits of CBD. CBD or Cannabidiol is one of the non-psychotropic cannabinoids found in Cannabis Sativa.
Scientific study on the effects of isolated non-psychoactive cannabinoids and terpenes on animals is documented back to the 1980s. The tremendous potential for these phytochemicals had long been apparent, and if used holistically in combination with conventional medicine rather than isolation the benefits are difficult to refute.
CBD is an amazing cannabinoid. It is known to enhance the Endocannabinoid tone; helps mediate pain perception, inflammation, and body temperature; in high concentrations, works as an anti-depressant; as well as helping with anxiety and appetite, among other things.
It also is an amazing neural protector and is shown to have the ability to protect the brain from traumatic brain injury and hypoxic episodes. CBD hemp can help with both chronic and acute disease.
In chronic conditions, it can help with arthritis, compromised immune systems, stress responses, aggression and digestive issues. There are also studies to research CBD’s effects on Type 1 diabetes, organ diseases and cancer.
Veterinarians are also finding CBD hemp can be useful in treating acute ailments like sprains and strains, torn ligaments, bone breaks and even during post-operative care to reduce swelling, pain and stiffness.
If your dog’s taking conventional drugs for any of these conditions, CBD hemp may make it possible to use lower doses of the drugs to achieve therapeutic effects. Since conventional medicines do have side effects, this is a useful benefit of CBD which has no side effects.
As with any herbal medicine, for most ailments you may not see an immediate effect. You’ll need to be patient. Your dog may feel some pain relief in a few hours but other symptoms like inflammation may take a few days to show improvement.
Because CBD hemp only has traces of THC, it won’t make your dog high. The most common side effect of CBD is that your dog may get a little drowsy and this side effect tends to decrease as tolerance increases. If your dog or cat reacts with adverse symptoms, you should stop giving him or her CBD and consult your veterinarian.
